“Great job, class. Have fun and be safe!” she called out after giving them their homework assignment for the weekend. Of course, she expected that most of them wouldn’t complete it until the very last minute, but that’s why she made it so short. A mere nine inches on the origin and uses of the Silencing Charm before next class. Anita watched as her students peeled out of her classroom, chattering excitedly about the weekend ahead of them. Once the last child left and closed the door behind them, Ani made her way down from the podium and entered her office.
Hogsmeade weekend was upon them and with it came an exciting date with one Montgomery Lundstrom, granted it was just some alone time in his studio, but it would most certainly be uninterrupted with most of the students down in the town. Their relationship was flourishing and Anita was seeing the world in bright colors, spending all of her free time painting beautiful works of art and dancing around in her office as she sang songs that remind her of him. She approached the floor length mirror in the corner of her office, just behind her desk, and smoothed out the wrinkles in her pale pink robes, adjusting her necklace and fixing her makeup. After all, she wanted to look impeccable for their time together. The charms professor was almost ready to leave when a soft knock sounded at the door. “Come in!” she called, rather hoping that it was him.
It wasn’t Montgomery, but her younger sister Layla, who entered. The girl was chewing on her bottom lip and looking suspiciously wary. Anita could feel her brows pull together as her sister made her way across the room toward her, her hands wringing together rather anxiously.
“Yes, Layla?” she asked cautiously, having a feeling that what the other had to say was not going to make Ani very happy. “Hi, Nita,” she greeted her with a warm smile, though the quivering in her lip wasn’t very convincing. “It’s Professor Lancaster, you know that,” she corrected her and Layla gave a small nod. “It’s the weekend, though.” Ani shook her head. “What is it?” The small brunette hesitated, mulling over her words before she opened her mouth once more. “I wanted to ask how you were?” “How I — how am I? I’m fine, Layla. Why do you ask?” “Cera and I were wondering… if there was something going on with you and Professor Lundstrom,” she said quickly, so quickly that Anita had to take a moment to make sure she heard her correctly. “Excuse me?” Heat had crawled up her neck, settling steadily on her cheeks with a look of incredulity written on her features. “You both have been so happy lately, and you’ve been spending a lot of time together, so we just thought-” “I believe that is none of your business,” she replied curtly, her arms wrapping around her chest. “Where did the two of you get this idea?” Layla shuffled her feet awkwardly, avoiding direct eye contact. “Morgan saw you together and so did I. And the both of you were rather dreadful at the beginning of the year, but something suddenly changed. You have to admit it’s a little suspicious.” Anita let out a disbelieving laugh. “Sus–suspicious? You don’t know what you’re talking about.” Her heart was hammering in her chest, her hands going behind her back to hide the shaking. How were they found out so easily? Were they not careful? Layla stood up tall, meeting her gaze with a fire burning inside her forest green eyes. “You haven’t denied it. And I know exactly what I’m talking about - just look at your face!” Her jaw was set, her teeth grinding as the irritation pricked at her skin. “I’ll say it one more time – it is none of your business.” The younger witch’s lips twitched into a small smile. “We’re family,” Layla said pointedly. “And I know you better than the rest here. Your lack of denial just confirms that we’re right!”
Ani brought a hand to her face, squeezing the bridge of her nose as she started to feel a headache coming on. What was she to do? The Headmistress still didn’t know of their status and, until then, no one else was supposed to know. A heavy sigh escaped her, her shoulders sagging in defeat. There was no getting Layla to back down once she was on a mission, and she didn’t feel like arguing any longer. Reaching for her wand, Anita waved it to the door, locking it tight, before arching it in a circle around them to muffle their voices.
“Okay, fine,” she hissed. “What do you expect me to say? McGonagall doesn’t know anything so you shouldn’t either.” Layla gave a triumphant smile, her pearly whites flashing through her lips. “Stop that, right now.” “We just wanted to know the truth. I’m happy for you, sis.” Anita could feel her head throbbing. “Not a word to anyone about this, understand? I’m not above giving you both detention.” She knew it was pointless to tell her not to tell Cera. In fact, the blonde was likely already confronting Monty about the same thing as they spoke. Layla dragged her finger in an ‘X’ formation over her heart. “I promise.” She breathed out a sigh of relief. “Good, now out, I have somewhere to be.” “Is it Professor Lundstr-” “OUT.” She waved her wand, opening the door and releasing the charm around them. “And not a word to anyone or you’ll be polishing the trophies for a fortnight!” The raven saluted her before practically skipping out of her office. Anita fell into a nearby armchair, her fingers rubbing her temples and she suddenly felt so exhausted. They’d most certainly have to tell Headmistress McGonagall now. And Ani didn’t think she was ready for the worst case scenario.
