THE FAQ
- Q: What is Hogwarts Magic?
A: Hogwarts Magic, often abbreviated as HM, was a Proboards based role playing board founded by Admin Snappers in 2005. HM’s original run lasted for nine years, closing its doors officially in late 2014. At its peak, HM boasted approximately 300 active characters across dozens of members.
- Q: How did the revival start?
A: Despite HM’s closure, many former members have consistently returned to visit the old boards. After wandering aimlessly for seven years, we started a Discord as a reunion spot for those of us looking to reconnect. After enough interest raised and hours of late night work by Admin Car, this site was established as a new place for us to continue the stories that we left behind in 2014.
- Q: Is this a new site or a continuation of the old one?
A: We’re somewhere in between. Though we have a completely new staff here on HM 2.0, many of our characters originated on the classic site. In that sense, we’re a continuation of HM in spirit. We hope to capture the elements that we loved most about HM: a relaxed plot, sandbox worldbuilding, experimental characters, and a welcoming community of weirdos. We want newcomers to feel as welcome here today as we did on the original site ten years ago and invite everyone, new and old, to help shape this site with your own ideas.
- Q: Why is it the year 2011?
A: HM was founded between the releases of Order of the Phoenix and The Half-Blood Prince. As a result, the site followed the canonical years of the books relative to the present day. Since OotP was set between the ‘95 and ‘96 school years, HM was always ten years behind our present day. We follow this same time scale, though we’ve introduced the events of Half-Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows into the site plot to keep us relevant. It’s also fun to make jokes about planking and skinny jeans.
- Q: Why don’t some of the sorted characters have applications?
A: Characters from the original site were automatically sorted when the revival first launched. Though members are free to write with these characters, we do ask that applications be posted in the Bios section of the boards before applying for any special positions (heads of houses, Ministry departments, prefects, etc.).
- Q: Are non-canon abilities available?
A: We have one or two characters with non-canon abilities who were grandfathered in from the old site. We currently do not accept abilities that are non-canon.
- Q: Do you have class requirements?
A: We encourage the creation of professors to fill out the Hogwarts roster and have no class post requirements for playing professors or students. Members are welcome to include classes in their threads. Our goal is to maintain a fun and free site with minimum obligations so that everyone can focus on what matters most to them.
- Q: Should I join with a character or an OOC account?
A: We would prefer people stick to making profiles for their characters. OOC accounts are just a way to differentiate staff interactions from RP. We just ask that you use character accounts for in character interactions.
- Q: What does it mean to "understudy" a canon?
A: Understudying is something we came up with as a way to fill out our roster of canon characters, either for specific plots that require the characters, or to test drive them before staking a proper claim. More information on being and becoming an understudy is located here.
