Gia wasn't sure what was going on this evening, but it seemed like everyone and their brother were hanging out in the common room, playing exploding snap or anything else super loud and irritating. Usually the Slytherin common room was rather calm and quiet, no one wanted to get on another person's nerves, but there was a buzz...and not the kind of buzz that Gia liked. That aside, Andi was nowhere to be found (typically nights light these she would have sought out her friend to go drink in the stands or something) and Leo was...also missing in action. All by her lonesome, she pulled her hair into a high pony, snagged her firewhiskey flask and tucked it into the inside pocket of her jacket. She slunk out of the common room unnoticed, which was exactly how she liked it.
The blonde witch hoped she didn't run into anyone out in the corridors or the boathouse or wherever she ended up...she was letting her feet carry her. As of now, they were carrying her up...to the astronomy tower. She ignored the moving images on the stained glass as she ascended the stairs, taking a swig of her firewhiskey once she hit the pictures that didn't care about underage drinking. Some of them were quite nosy and gossipy, but these guys...these guys she could handle. They minded their own business and snarked back if you had something to say. It was kind of fun...if you were into that.
When she got to the open tower, she headed out toward the edge where the stars were shining. She hadn't initially checked to see if anyone else was in the tower, but she'd come all this way from the dungeons to go back now. So...the girl she noticed after she sat down was just going to deal with sharing her silence with her.
Gia looked up at the sky and tried to see what Bella was looking at - the last time she'd come upon someone gazing up at the stars she was thrown off her entire evening plans. "What's it with you Ravenclaws and the stars?" her words weren't directed at Bella, per say, but if she answered her...Gia took another swig of her firewhiskey and enjoyed the burn as she leaned against the stone barrier of the tower.

Tonight was her mother’s birthday. The loss sat heavily on her heart today as she went through like it was any other day. First breakfast and that came with another letter from her father which she ignored, then Charms, Potions, Transfiguration, and then it was lunch. Bella went through the motions with a faint smile on her lips. No one even questioned why she was a little more reserved today. It was a long day - bearable - but long. After dinner she sat with her friends in the common room, quizzing each other on the last Transfiguration lesson. Idly, she rolled the mandrake leaf around in her mouth, waiting for the perfect chance to slip out to the Astronomy Tower. It came sooner than she expected, laughter bubbling up around her. “Hey, I’m gonna head out,” she said quickly, offering an apologetic smile. Her friends were quite familiar with her trips to the Tower. They teased her a little for leaving early, but then waved her on. Bella grinned at them and rushed to her dorm room to grab her telescope.[break][break]
Her legs had gotten quite used to making the trek up the tower. A few of the portraits lining the walls asked her how she was doing, trying to chit-chat for the brief moments she passed them while climbing the stairs. “I’m good,” she told them. “Just going to look.” Bella made it to the top, taking a moment to breathe in that crisp November air. It wasn’t nearly as windy as it should have been, but the slight breeze chilled her to the bone. Her teeth chattered until her body adjusted to the drop in temperature. “Now,” she said to herself, lining up her telescope on the observation deck. It was her mother’s telescope when she was an Astronomer. “Let’s find you.” She leaned over to look into the telescope, her fingers slowly adjusting the knobs on the side. She focused the lens and looked around, trying to find Andromeda. It was one of her mother’s favorites. When centered the constellation in her view, her hands relaxed and fell to her sides. There it was, she thought. She could imagine her mama putting her arm around her, telling her the story of Andromeda for the hundredth time. A soft smile pulled at her lips and she pulled back, gazing up at the sky with her own two eyes. It was so beautiful.[break][break]
Suddenly, she sensed she wasn’t alone. Bella tensed, whipping her head around to see a familiar witch walking toward the ledge, a flask in her hand. What was Gia doing up here? She didn’t know her very well, what with her being a year above her and the way no one was close with her. Bella brought her hands to her elbows, holding herself as she watched the girl sit down before noticing her. She felt very… vulnerable right now, like her secrets were out in the open, even though they weren’t. Isabella had almost turned back around to look at the stars again when Gia spoke up. She tilted her head ever so slightly, thinking about what she had said. Bella looked back to the stars. “I mean, what’s not to love about them?” Just look at them twinkling up in that dark sky. But Gia didn’t seem the type to get excited about stars. She lowered herself to the ground, leaning against the railing where she was. “I don’t think you care about that. What brings you here?”

No, Gia didn't know Bella that well. Different years and houses, after all. But the assumption she was a Ravenclaw must have been accurate as she didn't get corrected when the girl finally decided to speak, sliding down against the wall rather than continuing what she was doing with her telescope. Gia hadn't taken Astronomy in some time once she was able to choose her courses, so it had been quite a while since she'd been up there. Unfortunately, she should have assumed that she wasn't going to be alone, that someone was going to be there. Just like the quidditch pitch as of late, thanks to Sunny.
"Once you can tell me what there is to love, I might reconsider," she said. Her tone wasn't as sharp as it usually was, but there was still a little tone of irritation under her words. But she was right - Gia didn't care about that. And she didn't care too much for the brunette prying into why she was up in the tower at the moment, either. But honestly, Gia couldn't answer the question whether she wanted to or not, so instead she shrugged one shoulder and took a sip from her flask. "I went where my feet carried me. I couldn't listen to one more game of exploding snap," she said, screwing the cap back onto her flask as she tucked it away into her pocket. "I don't mean to bother you - is that yours?" she asked, nodding toward the telescope. It didn't look like one that was provided by the school, or that you were required to purchase.

Bella wasn’t bothered by the witch’s tone or her words. Astronomy wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea and she’d never begrudge anyone for that. She just settled herself against the bars and watched her shrug. Tonight Bells felt lonely and her heart yearned for her mother’s comfort, so having company wasn’t all that bad. Even if the company was Gia Jones. Bella shook her head when Gia said she didn’t mean to bother her, and she was about to tell her she didn’t when the blonde asked about her telescope. Her mouth hung open, the words dying on her lips as she was caught off guard by her question. Bella shut her mouth and looked back at the telescope. The brass shined in the moonlight, the intricate carvings on either side illuminated. It was specially made for her mother. Fingers traced the designs. She didn’t know how to answer the question. Part of her longed to speak of her mama, never getting the chance to do so at home with her father. Aunt Lily didn’t talk about her either. She had no one to talk to about it. [break][break]
But something told her that what she said to Gia stayed here in the Tower. She couldn’t pinpoint exactly why she felt this way, but it was a gut feeling. “It was my mother’s,” she said softly, deep chocolate eyes flicking back to Gia. “It’s her birthday today.” Her tone was full of sorrow, but she didn’t offer any more explanation. Bella hugged her knees to her chest. “And you didn’t bother me,” she clarified, shaking her head for emphasis. “I just didn’t expect anyone else to be here.”
