It had been a couple weeks since Professor Walker woke her from a dead sleep and brought her to the Headmistress’ office. That night earned the top spot on Lydia’s ‘worst days’ list. She hadn’t even gotten to talk to Ophelia before she was back home and watching her mother die, wondering how her best mate even knew this was coming. Right after she was gone, Noah got in a fight with their father and left, leaving her and Ryder alone to pick up the pieces. It was the hardest thing she’s ever gone through. They stayed home until the funeral. Noah didn’t even show, probably still mad at their father. Lydia clung to Ryder and did the best she could to help him, but she was an absolute mess. Aside from Cy, her mother had been her best friend. Now she was just… gone. Lydia didn’t know how she was going to move on from this. Her father didn’t help. He just went on with life like it never even happened. Liza was mad at him for that. She knew they didn’t love each other, but they had had three children together. He could at least act like it affected him. When it was time to go back to Hogwarts, she did everything she could to get herself together. The whole school would know by now, but they didn’t get to see her fall apart. [break][break]
Ophelia was her lifeline during these trying times. They, of course, talked about the visions she’d been having and Lydia promised her friend most sincerely she’d keep it a secret. No one needed to know. If they had been joined at the hip before, they were inseparable now. Lydia stayed with her every second of every day, afraid if she spent even a moment alone she’d fall apart. So when Cy was called to the Divination classroom at the end of lunch, Lydia could feel the anxiety building in her chest. She waited as long as she could, but when it seemed certain she wasn’t coming back before their next class, Lydia had to go alone. [break][break]
The brunette did her best to keep a smile on her face, but her heart was pounding. The sound echoed in her ears, falling in rhythm with her footsteps. Beat. Beat. Beat. Liddie walked to the dungeons, clutching her bag to her chest. They had Potions next, one of her worst subjects. She didn’t see how she was going to be able to pay attention, but she marched inside the classroom anyway, taking her usual seat in the back of the room. There were more people stuck in the dungeon than usual and she raised an eyebrow at it. Professor Avery entered and announced that this class was blended. He didn’t give any explanation for this, just dove right into the lesson. She didn’t see how sixth and seventh years could have the same lesson, but she pulled some parchment out of her bag and started writing down notes. It seemed like it was just a review for the older students as they were focusing on Draught of Living Death. She tried to listen to the professor as he went on about the ingredients and proper brewing, but she was distracted. More than once she had to scratch out her notes and start over. When he told the class to pair up to brew their own potion, Lydia felt a wave of sadness. Cy still hadn’t made her way back and she was usually her partner. One by one the class paired up, but still Lydia was alone. That was fine, she thought. She could brew this on her own. But after a while, someone came to sit next to her. Liza smiled half-heartedly. “Hi,” she offered, but her heart wasn’t in it. “I’ll grab the ingredients.”

Living Death Of A Class The quidditch captain pushed his food around into a quidditch pitch, working on new plays and strategy for the upcoming season. Lunch came and went faster than he thought and soon he was on his way to potions class. Potions was the worst. Not that Carter was horrible at the subject, he was average but Professor Avery was the worst and picked his handful of favourites every year and the rest of them were basically invisible to him. Carter was an invisible.
He entered the classroom to a clusterfuck. It was a mixed class? Carter wasn't sure how that was going to work but he sat and didn't ask questions. Then those dreadful two words that every student hates to hear was uttered..."Pair Up," came from Avery's mouth.
Carter looked around, he was to nervous to pair up with a seventh year, Lydia was usually with Ophelia. Carter looked behind him but the blonde was no where in sight, just Lydia Thank Merlin. The puff made his way over to her table and plopped down next to her. "Hey Lydia, where's Ophelia today?" Tagged;; Lydia Bradley

Since it seemed quite definite that Ophelia was going to be skipping this lesson, Liza was forever grateful that it was Carter who came to her rescue. At least she was pairing up with a friend and not a strange seventh year. Since he became Quidditch Captain he’d been so busy they’d hardly seen him. Of course, being captain had to be exceptionally demanding. Even though she was happy to see him sit down beside her, her spirits were still a bit low. “Oh,” she blinked, unsure of what to tell him. She knew that the Divination professor had been helping her through this whole ‘you might be a Seer’ stuff, but she wasn’t prepared to make up an excuse. “She’s getting an extra Divination lesson.” Truthful enough, she supposed. “Don’t tell Avery, though. I don’t want her getting into trouble.” Even if the Potions professor knew what was going on, she didn’t imagine he’d be so understanding. “I’ll grab the ingredients,” she repeated with a small smile, pushing off the table to stand. [break][break]
Lydia wasn’t the most patient witch on her best days. When she saw how crowded the ingredient closet was getting, she huffed frustratingly. Students of both years were looking around in confusion as if they never had to get ingredients before. “Move,” she told those closest to her, pushing through the small crowd, grabbing the correct ingredients, and getting the hell out of there. Once the others saw where she was grabbing the crowd started to disperse as they all got what they needed. By the time she got back to Carter, the stragglers were heading back to their tables with an armful of stuff. “Merlin,” she breathed, setting the ingredients on the table in front of them. “Why’d he combine the classes anyway? It’s so stuffy in here.” She wrinkled her nose at him before sorting the ingredients she gathered.[break][break]
She checked her textbook before filling the cauldron and igniting the flame beneath it. Infusion of Wormwood was first. “So, how’s being captain?” she asked him as she waited for the water to simmer. “Congratulations again, that's pretty awesome.” Lydia liked to watch Quidditch, but didn't care too much about playing it. Her brothers were the stars in her family and she liked it that way. Her dad didn’t expect much from a Hufflepuff like her. “I bet you’re just gonna kick some Ravenclaw butt next game,” she smiled at him before adding the Infusion of Wormwood, motioning for him to do the next step.

Living Death Of A Class Extra Divination lessons, that made sense to Carter. Ophelia was exceptional at Divination."Cross my heart and hope to be attacked by kelpies!" Professor Avery wasn't anyone's top pick for secret confidant and Carter was happy to stay invisible to the grouchy Potions Master. "Sounds good, I'll read over the instructions," he called as Lydia stood to head over to the ingredients cabinet.
Lydia returned in a huff of frustration, he understood completely. The combination of classes was a bit odd and he prayed it never happened again. "I wish I could tell you but I just hope he's not this crazy come next class and we have our space back... OW!" he was cut off by Avery grabbing the back of his neck and pushing it towards the pages of their potions textbook. Carter really needed to look around before he spoke in Avery's class.
Carter had been caught up in organizing the ingredients in order from when they needed to use them. "Oh captaincy is good. It's easy when you have a great team, they honestly don't even need me." The puff reached for the Powdered Root of Asphodel, pausing with the powder in his hands she congratulated him. "Thanks, I never thought Chandler would assign me to captain, Bo and Ethan work just as hard as I do." He added the powder after her nod. Lydia was much better at potions than he was and so he was grateful to be partnered with her. "I'm gonna try my best," he laughed, rubbing the back of his neck. "How have you been? I feel like we haven't talked in ages!" Tagged;; Lydia Bradley

Liddie tried to warn Carter before it happened, but it was like she blinked and the Professor was there. She grimaced in sympathy and looked back to the cauldron, not eager to get Avery’s attention. Though she’d have to agree with her friend. There was a nice steam rising from the simmering surface and she moved to place ingredients in, bringing up Quidditch. Lydia sat back and watched Carter grab the Powdered Root of Asphodel with a smile on her face. Ethan and Bo most certainly earned spots on her ‘hot puff’ list. Carter, too, but she didn’t crush hard on him like the other guys. It was kind of nice to have a friend she could lean on that didn’t share a dorm with her. “Yeah, but I doubt either of them really wanted the spot.” Bo wasn’t the committing type and Ethan? Well, Lydia had a feeling he had other things on his mind. Like a certain Ravenclaw he was sneaking around with. You can’t get anything past Lydia she had eyes everywhere. [break][break]
As she stirred the potion twice clockwise, Carter asked how she was doing. Well, that was certainly a loaded question even if he didn’t intend it to be. Liza let out a slow whooshing breath, pointing at the sheep brain while she picked up a knife and started trying to cut the Sopophorous beans. He must not have heard what happened. She debated for a moment on whether she should tell him or not. It was easier just assuming everyone knew. “I’m fine,” she said in a controlled voice, glancing up at him. “I - er - just got back to Hogwarts last week. My mum… well, we said goodbye and got to go to the funeral so I’m just happy that the Headmistress let Ryder and I stay home for so long.” If she could avoid the word, she could talk about it without falling apart. She paused in her task, resting her hand holding the knife as she smiled up at him. “I’m fine, though, really. I’m back at school with all my friends!” Lydia resumed cutting. “It really has been ages. Quidditch keeps you lot busy.” Once the beans were cut up, Lydia squeezed the juices into the potion, watching as it changed the color of the water. “Stir seven times counter clockwise,” she told him, starting to clean up her mess. “How’s school treating you this year?” She felt that sixth year was a breeze compared to the stress of the OWLs.

Living Death Of A Class It was true, the puff team was more so just happy to be there than searching for glory. Carter only accepted the position so that his shot at going pro might increase. The potion was simmering now and Lydia was stirring it when he saw he tense up a bit. "Oh sorry...I didn't mean to ...err. We don't have to talk about it." Obviously things were not going well for the puff. He felt bad not knowing what was going on in. her life but he had been so busy but that wasn't an excuse to be clueless about his friends life.
Lydia pointed at the sloth brain before attacking the beans. Carter made a face before attempting to pick it up. Nope. No way was he touching that with his hand, "Wingardium leviosa," he said as he watched the sloth brain dump into the cauldron. Carter set down his wand as Lydia started talking.
I - er - just got back to Hogwarts last week...
Oh my. "Merlin Lia, I'm so so sorry. I had no idea. I knew you had gone home but I wasn't sure why." Carter rested his hand on her shoulder, removing it once she started cutting again. "Well if you ever need anything, I'm here for you. I know you have Ophelia but if you ever want to chat about it...I'm here." Drips of bean juice landed in the potion and Carter watched the blood red liquid fall. A chuckle escaped his lips, "stupid busy. I barely have time to think." Grabbing the ladle, he began to stir, counting each rotation. "It's alright. Busy but that's to be expected I suppose. I've got a free period this term which is nice, how about you?" Tears had started to form in her eyes as Carter offered his condolences. Lydia quickly wiped them away before they could fall, focusing her attention on the beans. Gods, he was such a good friend and she did want to talk about it, but now was probably not the time or place to discuss her feelings. First of all, if she spoke any more about it she'd turn into a puddle of tears and she didn’t want anyone other than family to see that. Ophelia counted as family to her. Second of all, they both would be too distracted to make a decent potion and she didn’t want to face Avery’s displeasure. “Thank you,” she said to him earnestly, offering him a half-hearted smile. Maybe someday soon she’d be able to talk to him about it.[break][break]
She was glad he took to the subject change so easily and felt her heart lighten a little as she swept the discarded bean bits into her hand to throw out. Liza smiled at him when he talked about how busy he was. Perhaps if she was inclined to play sports she’d be just as busy. Honestly, she wanted to be so busy she didn’t have time to think. That would make it easier to hide from her grief. “I’ve got a free period as well. Ophelia usually takes me to the forest to go foraging during it, but it’s still a break.” She let out a light laugh which earned a look from the Professor. Oops. “There’s less pressure this year which I find appealing. Yeah, it’s been a fun year so far. You know, minus the - you know.” When he was done stirring, Lydia peered into the cauldron. The color and texture looked right… but. “Do you think it’s good?” She looked around at the rest of the class, most of them finishing up as well. Professor Avery would be by soon to inspect them.

Living Death Of A Class Carter watched as the bean Lydia was trying to cut jumped around the table, avoiding her blade expertly. It would have been more entertaining if she hadn't started to cry. The puff looked up to see where Professor Avery was skulking about before turning back to Lydia, "maybe we can talk more about your mom when Avery isn't watching our every move?" He did want to be there for his friend but knew that Avery would be less than thrilled
Finally cutting the beans and discarding the shells, the potion was close to being finished. "Foraging, huh? Every free period? What are you foraging for?" Carter smiled, he knew Ophelia was a little more on the organic nature side but foraging every free period was wild to Carter. "I suppose it's similar to quidditch every free period."
It had been a fun year. "I wish there was more parties though, maybe after the Christmas holidays?" There was never a promise of parties but Paisley had hosted them last year and Vance the year previous. It seemed party planning always fell on Hufflepuff's shoulders. "Bet we could throw a wicked one." Tagged;; Lydia Bradley

What didn’t they go foraging for? “Oh, you know mushrooms, flowers, sometimes rocks,” she said with a shrug. Lydia didn’t really mind it, but she was getting a little tired of the forest. But she knew this was her way of processing Noah’s former engagement. Oh dear, she forgot to tell Ophelia that was over! What a ditz! Lydia shut her eyes tightly for a moment as she internally kicked herself. Well, she’d just have to tell her after class. She blinked a couple times before smiling back at Carter, hoping he was too busy with the potion to notice. It wasn’t really a secret that Lydia was trying to hook up Ophelia with her brother, but she kind of kept it between them. She’d explain if he asked, but she was kind of hoping he wouldn’t. [break][break]
“I wish there was more parties though.”[break][break]
“Oh my gods, me too! I was just saying this to Ophelia,” she laughed - softly so she didn’t earn another glare from Professor Avery. There was a depressing lack of parties at Hogwarts this year. The Harvest Festival was fun, but it wasn’t ‘sneak around the castle’ fun. “We totally should! I told Ophelia we should just throw our own.” Ophelia didn’t seem crazy about that idea, but Lydia was so down. “How would we top the boathouse party though?” Paisley threw a truly badass party. She couldn’t think of a prettier place at Hogwarts.

Living Death Of A Class Mushrooms, flowers, sometimes rocks...Carter blinked. It was surely someone's fun but not really Carter's idea of having a nice free period. OPhelia always kind of walked to the beat of her own drum so it wasn't too far off for her. "What does she do with it all?" The potion was brewing and Carter watched as bubbles started to appear and disappear, leaving a smooth black surface for Professor Avery to inspect.
The pair were speaking in whispers, so as to not draw the angry professor's attention. "Right?" he added enthusiastically. "Since Vance and Carson left, no one has stepped up to the plate, but I think keeping it in Hufflepuff is the move." Sneaking around the castle was fun and it added some extra fun so as to not get caught. "I think we could throw a really great one, where has one not been held before...we could be groundbreaking."
Of course, he would love to have Ophelia help them if she was up to it. The puff seemed to be pulled in a million different directions, maybe she wasn't up to the party planning. "Nathaniel, that tall ravenclaw guy, had thrown a great one in the Astronomy tower too...maybe the forest? Or is that too dangerous?" Tagged;; Lydia Bradley

Ophelia was eccentric, sure, but that was one of the things Liza loved most about her. She wasn’t worried about what other people thought of her - she just did what she wanted and was kind to anyone who crossed her path. Lydia didn’t think she ever heard her best mate say anything negative about anyone. Lydia was a bit of a gossip, but she was devoted to her friends and kept their confidence. Just know that if you tell her something that it was very likely Cy would hear it as well. Carter seemed a little dumbfounded at what they did in their spare time and Liddie snickered a little. It was strange, but it was quality time with her sister-from-another-mister doing what she loved. “She collects them. Sometimes gives them out as gifts,” she answered nonchalantly. Lydia had her own collection of painted rocks and pressed flowers from Ophelia. She would keep them until she died, probably. [break][break]
Foraging was all fine and dandy, but it was definitely not on Lydia’s fun things list. Now parties? That was more her style. Lydia hunched down a little so they could speak in their excited whispers without earning the attention of the professor. A wide grin pulled at her lips and she practically bounced in her seat. “Oh, I’m so down,” she giggled in her excitement. Hufflepuff most certainly needed to keep the tradition alive. And who better to do it than Carter and herself? [break][break]
“Maybe the forest?”[break][break]
Lydia lit up at that suggestion. “Oooh, yes! What about the creature sanctuary? I’m sure I can get the fairies to light it up. Maybe a bonfire, too?” The sanctuary was probably the safest place in the forest. All the creatures there were free roaming in their own little areas. “I guess the nifflers might try to steal everyone’s money, but they’re so much fun to play with it may work out.”

Living Death Of A Class "That's pretty cool. I bet she has loads," Carter wasn't one for collecting things. You could say he was hard-wired to be able to pick up and leave at the drop of a hat. Preparing for his professional quidditch job he supposed. It was interesting to see and hear what other people collect though.
It was all coming together now. Occasionally, Carter would look up and make sure that Avery wasn't near them when they got a little too excited and their voices rose. "This is going to be amazing! We're going to enter our seventh year as legends!" If they could keep up the parties through the new year, Lydia and himself would be well set for their seventh year. Maybe land themselves dates?
"Yes!" It was hard to be excited and quiet at the same time. "The sanctuary would be perfect. I'll see if I can bribe Silas and Jay to do some of the protective enchantments around the perimeter." The puff knew he had done it for Paisley when she threw parties but he wasn't sure how she had gotten him to do it. "Ahhh, maybe we tell everyone to leave valuables in the dorms." This was going to be extraordinary. "Lydia, this is going to be a great night, I can feel it." Now, if only this class would end and they could go talk about this more and start planning. Carter was too excited for this party.

Legends… now that was something that Lydia could get down with. No one really thought about Lydia without thinking about Ophelia or Noah. As much as she loves her friend and her brother, she wanted to stand out a little sometimes. Not often, she was very content with her life as it was, but a small part of her longed to be recognized for herself. This was an opportunity to stand out from the rest. Lizzie Vance and Paisley were Queens of parties and Liza really liked the idea of being seen in the same light. “This is so cool, Carter,” she whispered excitedly. Planning parties with Carter sounded like the biggest adventure for her final years at Hogwarts. He was practically her best friend aside from Cy.[break][break]
“Jay will for sure. Think you can get Silas on board?” The Prefect took his job very seriously, but he did help out Paisley for the boathouse party so maybe he’d be down for this one, too. It was all coming together and she honestly couldn’t wait. In her mind, she imagined what it would all look like when it was put together. “I bet Rory can smuggle in some stuff to drink. I could get some food from the kitchen,” she said in a hushed voice, rambling at this point. “Oh my gods, this is going to be amaz-” Lydia cut off quickly when Professor Avery came round. She tensed as he inspected their potion closely. Please let it be fine, please. He sniffed at it, but didn’t say anything before he kept moving to look at the rest of the potions. Liza unclenched her jaw. “That’s good, right?”[break][break]
She didn’t let Avery spoil her good mood. When Carter said it was gonna be a great night, she nodded excitedly. “Yes!” It really was hard to be quiet. “I can just see it now. Holy cow am I excited. When should we throw it?”

Living Death Of A Class It was cool. Carter had never been a party thrower before, just a partygoer. It was a relief to have Lydia with him to plan, it was a big undertaking and he was sure that if Carter had to plan alone, he would forget something and get them busted. Also, the fact that he and Lydia were basically best friends helped a lot. "I know, right? I already can't wait," he said with a big smile on his face. "Someday, kids are going to be talking about parties after we graduate and say; Maybe if we do this we will be as cool as Carter Ashdown and Lydia Bradley." It was a pipe dream but what a pipe dream it was.
"Definitely. Silas isn't so bad once you get to know him..." he paused before amending his statement to, "and by 'get to know' I mean bribe." Paisley was a damsel with authority, as quidditch captain she could parley with Silas on a prefect level. Maybe Carter could relate on the same level.
Listening as Lydia rattled off great idea after great idea, it soon came to a hush as the Potions Master came rounding around their table. Both puffs were stiff as a board while Professor Avery sniffed their potion. Was that good? "I think so...he never said it wasn't good so I'm taking that as a win," he whispered, as to not draw Avery's attention back to them. When? Carter thought for a moment. "Well, we're pretty close to the end of term and we're going to be heading home for the holidays pretty soon..." Carter turned sharply at the sound of Avery berrating one of the seventh years, before turning back to Lydia. "How about when we get back from break?"

All thoughts of her mother dying had left her mind, her pain replaced by the sheer and utter excitement this party enticed. She was buzzing with it, bouncing lightly in her seat as if that would release some of this charged energy. Her lips were spread into such a wide grin and when Carter said kids would one day hope to be as cool as them she grabbed his arm. “Stop!” It was almost too much, the anticipation. “Merlin, I can’t wait, this is going to be sooo awesome!” She wondered if Carter realized just how successful he was at cheering her up. Honestly, this was better than a Cheering Charm. The perfect distraction from her recent troubles - something for her to place all her focus on. Screw classes, this took priority.[break][break]
She snickered a little at his amendment, her hand falling back into her lap. “What do you even bribe him with?” She didn’t know Silas at all, but from what she had heard he was pretty no-nonsense. If Carter felt confident that he could convince him, then she believed it would all work out. They had their jobs, then.[break][break]
Lydia was glad that they were in the clear. Professor Avery likely wouldn’t come back unless they gave him a reason to. They just had to keep quiet, tucked away in the back corner. “I think he’d let us know if it was dreadful,” she said thoughtfully, peering into the cauldron to inspect it herself. Part of her wanted to drop something in it to see how potent it was, but she only had leaves and flowers from Ophelia and she didn’t want to get rid of them.[break][break]
“How about when we get back from break?”[break][break]
That seemed perfect to her. It was close enough that they wouldn’t have to wait too long, but far enough away to let her focus on it for a time. Liza nodded eagerly. “That sounds great! Gives everyone something to look forward to when they come back.” She knew she wouldn’t go home to her father for the holidays so perhaps she’ll tag along with Ophelia. Cy’s parents loved Lydia. Her only qualm was Ryder. Where was he going to stay? “I’ll ask Ophelia if she wants to help and then I can get started on stuff this week.” The fairies would probably need convincing and Rory needed as much advance notice as possible to smuggle alcohol in.
