The request didn’t come as much of a surprise to Abe. He could hear the titters of his coworkers as he brought in Lia to the ministry - the way he held her so close to his chest to protect her from what was to come when they arrived. The way she had her own arms wrapped around him. The way they almost had to be pulled apart when they arrived, Abe looking after her like he was losing her for the second time.
After she was brought in, Abe’s supervisor called him into his office. “Congrats,” he said, but Abe’s face didn’t reveal anything celebratory. It seemed that even in the short minutes he’d been back, the gossip had already circled to the Department of Magical Law Enforcement…and they were curious now if Abe knew more than he let on…that he was perhaps in league with Lia. It seemed ridiculous honestly, but…perhaps it had been suspicious to an outside eye. “You understand its protocol to do some investigating, yeah?” he was asked, and Abe merely nodded, pressing his lips into a fine line.
There was a lot going on through Abe’s mind. He and Lia had been just kids when they were together - before she’d made headway with Draco and the Malfoy’s. Before she became the monster that so many people knew her as today. Abe didn’t know her as that monster…the Malfoy’s had done something to her, transforming her from Lia to Vader…making her into some death machine to do their bidding. Abe… had protested at first. But Lia had made sure to make it seem that she did not want him anymore, and what Lia wanted (or didn’t want), Lia got. Abe took a few steps back and had regretted that decision for the last thirteen years.
Blinking slowly as he was ushered to sit in a white-walled room with two chairs facing one another, he sat down and leaned back in the seat. Prior to entering the room, he’d been given a dose of Veritaserum…enough so that he’d be able to tell the truth and nothing but. He’d been on the dosing side of this method before - never the interrogated. And the potion made him feel…really uncomfortable.
”Do you know Vadellia Allman?”
Simple questions first, of course. ”Yes. I’ve known her for longer than thirteen years.”
”Did you have a relationship with the accused?”
”Yes. Before…before the Malfoy’s.” there was a bit of silence as the other auror scratched something down with their quill.
”Before today, when was the last time you have spoken to the accused?”
”Hogwarts.” the serum was definitely in full swing. Abe felt like telling his entire story.
”So you do not have any affiliation with Vadellia Allman.”
Abe shook his head, no. ”Then why, we would like to know, are you requesting her for the rehabilitation program that’s still in its infancy?”
How…they knew about that was beyond Abe. He had just submitted the paperwork after reaching out to Saffron within hours of being subjected to this interrogation. But, considering how quickly the titters had reached the Department of Magical Law Enforcement Head, he wasn’t surprised. Owls were constantly flying back and forth at the ministry. Abe let out a long, disgruntled sigh, and the auror opposite him raised a brow.
”I would have submitted the first dark wizard we brought in for the rehabilitation program, knowing that they would have to go through a series of tests before being allowed back into society, even at a limited level. Any witch or wizard deemed unfit by the Ministry would be sent to Azkaban and likely suited for the Dementor’s Kiss. If L-Vadellia does not pass the series of tests, she, too, would be sent back to Azkaban and likely subjected to the Dementor’s kiss for her crimes.” Abe raised a brow as he looked at the wizard, still scratching things down with their quill.
”I have not spoken to Vadellia in over a decade. I do not know why she committed the crimes, other than that certain pressures could have been put upon her to brainwash, for lack of better terms. The tests for the rehabilitation program will show if it was brainwashing or if she is actually the monster that everyone is playing her out to be.” Even though Abe was leaving things out of the story, he was telling the truth.
The auror got up and left the room, Abe’s skin still buzzing from the potion. After a few moments, he came back in and nodded toward the door. ”Don’t be surprised if we ask you back in, but for now… you’re free to go.”
Abe hoped that Lia would know the feeling of being free…eventually, too.
