There's a fire inside her that both fueled & consumed her
It was Saturday in spring, the grounds should have been filled with students basking in the warm weather that came after a long winter but no, everyone was inside studying for their final examinations . The term was coming to an end and Clarissa was at her wits end with the pages of these boring old books. She wanted something more. Something that Hogwarts wasn’t teaching her. The serpent strolled through the grounds and towards the forbidden forest, for a forbidden forest it sure was populated most days but today it was quiet.
Clarissa had been fighting with a power that no one could explain. No one at Hogwarts shared her gift, if you could even call it that. She barely shared her secret with her sister Gwen. She was alone. There was a clearing coming up ahead, she jogged to reach it faster before stopping in the center of the big open space. The witch raised her arms above her head and brought them down hard, two flames bursting to life in her hands as she did. This was always how it started but soon enough…yup there it was. The flames started to creep up her arms and soon were up to her shoulders. The witch had no idea how to put them out.
Frantically, Clarissa started throwing her arms to put out the flames but it was just throwing fire around her in the forest, starting up a mini forest fire. She was panicking now, she was going to die in this forest, all because she didn’t want to study today. The fire was getting bigger and bigger until she sank to her knees and just accepted her fate.
“Aguamenti”
The young witch opened her eyes as the smoke was starting to clear and she saw Professor Avery standing there, wand aloft and a stern look on his face but not as harsh as she was expecting. He almost looked perplexed. “I’m sorry Professor. I just lost control of a spell and …thank you for helping me. I’ll head back up to the castle now,” she said, making her way around the tall man.
“Edison, Stop.”
And boy did that stop her in her tracks. He wasn’t yelling or anything. It was calm and cool but sent chills through her spine in a terrified sort of way. She turned to face Professor Avery and instead of telling her how she would be serving detention all of next year, he spoke of a witch who had similar powers that he once knew. She was hiding out now, but wouldn't be hard to find if Clarissa wanted to learn more about…what he called ‘being an elemental.’ “What’s an elemental?” Avery shook his head, never cracking a smile the entire time.
“I’m not the one to tell you. Now run. If you don’t get an Outstanding on your potions exam I will expel you for trespassing in the forbidden forest.”
The serpent had never run so fast back to the common room to crack open her Advanced Potions textbook.
